Niigata lacquerware
Niigata lacquerware is lacquerware produced in and around Niigata City, Niigata Prefecture.
During the Edo period, Niigata was a port of call for Kitamae ships, and diverse cultures flowed in from all over the country via land and sea routes.
This area has historically been an important trading center for goods, with sales routes extending to Edo, Osaka, and even Hokkaido.
Niigata's lacquerware culture took root in the early Edo period, and by the late Edo period it had become known as one of Japan's leading lacquerware production areas.
Lacquerware produced in Niigata is characterized by a wide variety of colors and patterns, and is known as a "treasure trove of unique lacquerware."
This is because Niigata was a distribution center for many goods, and people and goods from all over the country gathered there, leading to the development of a rich lacquerware culture.

Stone-grain coating
"Stone grain coating" expresses the rough texture of stone, and the coating is hard, making the surface resistant to scratches.

Painting on metal
Metal surfaces have low water absorption and drying properties, and are said to be unsuitable for lacquering. After several years of trial and error, including the selection and mixing of materials to be used, changes to the priming method, and other processing steps, we have finally made it possible to lacquer metal.
The warm texture of the "stone grain coating" applied to the base metal writing instrument is one of a kind.

In order to promote Niigata lacquerware, a traditional craft of Niigata City, to the world, a square plate with Oborogin lacquer in the same color as the one used this time was used at the dinner party at the G7 Niigata Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors Meeting held in Niigata City in May 2023, and was also presented to ministers and other officials from each country as a commemorative gift.

*Some products may have black spots, but these are just visible lacquer that is applied by hand multiple times during the process and do not indicate defects such as scratches or stains.
Enjoy the different textures of each carefully finished stone grain coating.
